Arturo Pérez-Reverte was born in 1951 in Cartagena ↗, a Roman port city on the coast of Murcia, Spain ↗. Trained in journalism and political science, he spent years as a war correspondent — reporting from conflict zones, going missing twice, and accumulating experiences that would eventually define his fiction.

Arturo Pérez-Reverte

Spanish novelist and former war correspondent; creator of the Captain Alatriste series.

His book Territorio Comanche, drawn directly from those years, strained his relationship with his employers. He resigned and turned to writing full time. He has published more than 16 novels, along with countless magazine and newspaper articles, and has appeared in radio and TV interviews worldwide.

Writing cannot eliminate the pain experienced in life — but it helps relieve it.

Inspiration and Influences

The Captain Alatriste novels — seven books later adapted into a feature film — are rooted in 17th-century Spain ↗: its politics, its contradictions, and its underclass. Pérez-Reverte writes with equal parts historical criticism and swashbuckling adventure, drawing on deep research into chess, swordsmanship, Dutch Golden Age painting, and Mediterranean history.

His most acknowledged literary debt is to Alexandre Dumas ↗, the French master of historical fiction. Pérez-Reverte paid direct tribute in two novels: The Club Dumas and The Fencing Master. His daughter Carlota Pérez-Reverte ↗ contributed to the early Alatriste books by combing through historical documents on Madrid ↗'s 17th-century streets and society — grounding the series in verifiable detail.
